Playing Time

Playing time policy

In the August 2025 NUBBA Board of Directors meeting the following policy was passed concerning playing time:

Since the beginning of traveling sports, playing time has been one of the most common concerns. Parents should understand that strict, consistent enforcement of minimum playing time guidelines—either in a single game or across a season—cannot be guaranteed. Factors such as player absences, health, foul trouble, substitution patterns, injuries, and other game situations make exact adherence impossible.

The guidelines outlined on the previous page are not meant for parents to track minutes with stopwatches. However, NUBBA stresses to all coaches the importance of following these guidelines as closely as possible, as they reflect our mission and program goals.

To clarify expectations, the following guidelines apply:

  • 3rd Grade: All players will have equal playing time in each game.
  • 4th–6th Grade: All players will receive playing time, though it may not be equal.
  • 7th & 8th Grade: Playing time is not guaranteed.

It is important to note that “equal” is easier to measure than “fair.” Coaches must often make decisions in the best interest of the team—such as adjusting lineups to match opponents, size, or game situations. To remain competitive, coaches must have some flexibility in determining playing time.
